Onigiri (おにぎり)

Banner

Been telling myself to make onigiri since last month, but I never really got to do it until today. Went to the local family mart to stock up on the ingredients. There are 3 fillings here, Beef, Tuna Mayo and Tanuki. This is my 1st attempt in making it and I'd say its really tasted really good. I'll just brief on the fillings for the Onigiri i made. For actual ingredient list, Pls watch the following recomended vidoes by runnyrunny99 and cookingwithdog.

For the rice, I use Japanese sushi graded rice, the reason for using this is because it sticks! Cook 3 cups rice with 3 1/4 water. No need to add vinegar to rice as it is not meant to be for sushi.

For beef fillings, cut the beef into bite sizes, add in grated garlic & sugar . Mix everything equally, leave it to rest for about 1/2 hr and then stir fry it in a pan with some oil.

Tuna Mayo fillings - Easy~! Canned Tuna flakes in water and Mayonnaise. Remove water from the canned tuna, add mayonnaise to it and stir!

Tanuki fillings - You will need to mix Agedama, Spring Onions and Mentsuyu together. For Agedama, you can refer to runnyrunny99 video for instructions on how to make. If you can't find any mentsuyu, soy sauce is a good replacement. Have the 3 ingredient poured into your rice and mix well!

Wet your hand with salted water, grab a palm full rice, make a dent in the middle, put in your fillings and cover it up with another small amount of rice. You can shape it using ur hand into a triangle shape, or if you have one of those onigiri maker, you can just throw it in and you'll get the perfect shape!

After you have your triangular rice ball, take a piece of roasted nori (Seaweed) and wrap it up! Actually its quite easy to make. and also you just actually put in any fillings your heart desires...I think imma put in cream cheese on my next attempt! lol, for accurate list of ingredient and its amount used, please refer the 2 videos i recommended above.

Try it! Its simple, fun, filling and delicious! いただきます!

Onigiri (お握り or 御握り; おにぎり), also known as omusubi (お結び; おむすび?) or rice ball, is a Japanese food made from white rice formed into triangular or oval shapes and often wrapped in nori (seaweed). Traditionally, an onigiri is filled with pickled ume (umeboshi), salted salmon, katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative. Because of the popularity of onigiri in Japan, most convenience stores there stock onigiri with various fillings and flavors. There are even specialized shops whose only products are onigiri for take out.
